+ About the work
Locating The Personal is a series of photograms; self-portraits that set out to question the representation of the Black female figure within the Western canon of photography. Through encounters with material, I mark my presence. In negotiating between personal levels of visibility, I claim space. In making these images, bodily surfaces such as hands are illuminated, simultaneously being brought in and out of focus.
The prints bear the physical traces of the artist's physical interaction with the material.
