+ About the work

Yutao Gao’s Two and a half, Relic surveys a series of photographic representations of sacred objects from one of Germany’s most ancient cathedrals; Aachener Dom in the Lower Rhine Basin.

Shrine of St.Felix shows an extraordinarily fine 11th Century casket. Different generations of photographic image making are collapsed into one frame in a gesture that seems to symbolise an offering towards a conceptual understanding of time in relation to visual representation.

The image transports us back into history via Charlemagne’s casket and onwards to the present, where the artist’s gentle physical touch, multiplies the object futurewards.
